A-level development year

A one-year course for international students wishing to prepare for the two-year A-level programme. The course focuses on developing students’ English language skills and subject knowledge.

Age 16-17
Start dates September - June (Term dates)
Curriculum A-level
Minimum language level IELTS 4.5 / Common European Framework level B1
Subjects and qualifications

Students choose two options from the following subjects to prepare for future A-level study:

  • Maths
  • Science
  • Business Studies
  • British Life and Culture

In addition, students have lessons in:

  • ICT
  • Study Skills

As part of the programme, students also receive tuition in English for Academic Purposes and may choose to prepare for the IELTS exam.

Weekly tuition

22 hours plus 4 hours of supervised prep

Weekly sports and activities 5 hours sport and activities
Organised trips and tours

These will include whole day excursions to places such as:

  • London
  • Cambridge
  • Oxford
Fees

Termly fees for the academic year 2010/2011 are £8,932

Next steps

Glossary

A-level
Part of the Further Education system in the UK. For students looking to continue their education at a British university, A-levels are the ‘gold standard’ of British education and are accepted by all UK universities, as well as many other institutions worldwide.

AS-level
A condensed version of A-level which can be achieved in one year.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)
A language course that includes learning skills and vocabulary appropriate for study and is designed to support students in their academic education.
